Osinbajo made the proposal while explaining the DFC concept Thursday during a lecture on a just and equitable energy transition for Africa at the Center for Global Development in Washington DC.Prof. Osinbajo in a State House press release signed by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande stated that “debt for climate swaps is a type of debt swap where bilateral or multilateral debt is forgiven by creditors in exchange for a commitment by the debtor to use the outstanding debt service payments for national climate action programs.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this today at a meeting with diplomats from the G-7 countries comprising the United States, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, France, Japan, and also the Republic of Egypt. Other global agencies like the United Nations, World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF), were also in attendance at the meeting held at the Presidential Villa.

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, who is chairman of the Committee gave the directive on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, during a meeting of the Committee where the report of the Technical Working Group (TWG) on repatriation of Nigerians displaced from the North-East was presented by Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Committee.
