The Chairman, Senate Committee on the FCT, Senator Smart Adeyemi (PDP-Kogi), said Nigeria’s successful hosting of the World Economic Forum would serve as an opportunity to address the insurgency in Nigeria.
Adeyemi said this on Tuesday in Abuja during an interview with newsmen.
He said it was unfortunate that Nigeria was currently having this security challenge, adding that it was not peculiar to the country.
He said: “This is a good development that is coming at this time because more investors will come and invest and new businesses and industries will open up.
“Once people are gainfully employed in these places, frustration will not come in and the risk of tempting somebody to consider suicide action will be greatly reduced.”
The FCT committee chairman said that most investors attending the global event would key into the nation’s economic potentials with a view to investing in it.
Adeyemi appealed to the Federal Government and the nation’s policy makers to buy into the WEF ideals and ensure that the hosting translates into increased social and economic growth of the country.
The lawmaker further advised President Goodluck Jonathan and the economic team not to spare any effort in encouraging industries and foreign investors to come to Nigeria and establish their businesses.
According to Adeyemi: “We must find a way of bringing back those multi-national companies that have left the country, now that we are making appreciable efforts in the power sector.”
Speaking on the Federal Government’s directive that workers, except those on essential duties, should stay at home during the period, he said it was an acceptable standard all over the world.
He said: “”The government has done the right thing.
“We need to ensure free movement of the visitors.
“It has been done in many countries of the world that I know.
“When you are holding a very big event, you have to find a way of reducing the traffic and by so doing you control security and monitor the movement of the people.”
Adeyemi explained that it was a very important forum that Nigerians must be proud of hosting it.
