As lobbying enters a major stage, the three senators from Niger State have jointly declared their support for Senator Ahmed Lawan for the seat of the Senate president.
The three elected senators in a joint statement signed and made available to our Correspondent in Minna said their resolve was after due consultations and considerations and in recognition of the supremacy of the All Progressives Congress’s position on the matter.
The statement reads in part: “There is no gainsaying the fact that the 9th National Assembly needs someone like Senator Ahmad Lawan’s leadership qualities that will facilitate in making laws for the good governance of Nigeria.
“This is because we: Senator Mohammed Sani Musa of Niger East Senatorial District, Senator Sabi Abdullahi of Niger North Senatorial District, and Senator Muhammad Bima Enagi of Niger South Senatorial District believe he has the competence, charisma and integrity to preside over the affairs of the Senate.
“His display of honesty, sincerity of purpose, respect for divergent views, loyalty to and believe in party supremacy as well as proven experience in the business of lawmaking makes him the obvious choice for the legislature’s top job.
“It is therefore our belief and hope that the Presidency of Senator Lawan at the 9th Senate will also bring about the transformation of our dear Niger State even as we look forward to sponsoring bills that will benefit the good people of the state.
“We, the Distinguished Elected Senators of Niger State will pursue vigorously legislations that will attract development to our state and add values to the lives of our constituents.”
According to Senator Mohammed Sani Musa from Niger East Senatorial District: “I believe Senator Ahmed Lawan has an impeccable character and undeniable wealth of experience as a lawmaker to drive the aspirations and vision of the 9th Senate towards achieving its mandate.
“There is no doubt that he has also demonstrated stability, reliability and fidelity towards ensuring sound and people-oriented legislation at the Senate as he demonstrated in the build-up to the 2019 general elections where despite the pressure from the opposition, remained resolute and committed towards promoting the good course of the Senate as the apex law-making organ in the country.”
Musa added that Lawan has remained detribalized, bi-partisan and accommodating to varying views as long as they are positive and can add to the growth and wellbeing of Nigerians.
“He has demonstrated this in his support for legislations sponsored by lawmakers who might not have been in the same political parties with him at the floor of the senate,” he added.
On his part, the Spokesman of the Senate, Dr. Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi, who represents Niger North Senatorial District, said: “I am optimistic that Senator Lawan would promote homogeneity of purpose at the 9th Senate and foster unity among distinguished senators as well as other arms of government, in a manner that will add value to good governance in Nigeria.
“In my years as a lawmaker, I have known Senator Lawan as a man without any form of primordial sentiment. Even though each of us represent our various constituencies, his interest is in the development of Nigeria.
“I believe he embodies outstanding qualities that are germane to the success of the 9th Senate and the government as a whole. Therefore, I join my colleagues in endorsing his Senate Presidency ambition.”
Also, the representative of Niger South District, Senator Muhammad Bima Enagi, said: “I believe that the APC’s decision to endorse Senator Lawan for the Presidency of the Senate is a wise and timely decision that has great benefits not only for the party but for the next phase of governance as a whole in the country.
“He has the qualities and leadership skills to harmonize the 9th Assembly and promote effective legislative process that will enhance the qualities of laws that we hope to make in the Senate.”
