Senate on Wednesday launched investigation into the decision of MultiChoice Nigeria to hike its tariffs.
MultiChoice Nigeria had announced an increase in the prices of its DStv and GOtv subscription packages.
The Senate’s decision was sequel to a motion sponsored by Senator Abba Moro.
Leading debate on the motion, Senator Moro said that Nigerians were dumbfounded over the pay-Tv tariff hikes, adding that instead of paying fixed amount, Multi-Choice should provide alternative to the people to subscribe to pay-per – view.
He added that Multi-Choice Nigeria willfully and perpetually increases the cost of its bundles because there is no regulation whatsoever in place for fixing rates without recourse to economic situation of the country.
He added ” “Nigerians are demanding that, rather than paying fixed rates for packages monthly, pay-tv service providers should introduce a subscription model which allows subscribers pay per-view to enable them match their TV consumption to subscription as it is with the case of electricity metering and mobile telephony.”
Seconding the motion, Senator Yusuf Yusuf said that it was high time for the country to stand up against exploitation of Nigerians by Multi-Choice and demanded for slashing of their rates.
“This is high time we stood up firmly and face MultiChoice to make sure we protect Nigerians. I support that their rates are scale downward,” said Senator Yusuf
After exhuastive debate on the motion, the Senate resolved to set up an ad hoc Committee to further investigate incessant increase in fees by @DStvNg with a view to finding lasting solution to it.
Among the members of the Committee are Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Senator Suleiman Kwari, Senator Yusuf Yusuf , Senator Lekan Mustapha , Senator Chukwuka Utazi , Senator Akon Eyakenyi and the Committee will be chaired by Deputy Senate Whip, Senator Abdullahi Sabi.
According to Senate President, Senator Ahmad Lawan, the Committee has one month to conclude the Investigation.
