As part of plans to rehabilitate inmates and train them on various skills to enable them get integrated into the society, the Chairman of the Sani Bello Foundation, Colonel Sani Bello (rtd), has secured the release of 32 inmates in Niger State.
Colonel Bello is the father of the Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello.
The senior Bello disclosed through his Non-Governmental Organization, Sani Bello Foundation, that the release will also help to decongest the prisons.
The Director General of the foundation, Zakari Ikani, who was at the prison on Tuesday to check the level of the inmates crimes, discovered that some of them had civil cases and after asking for the permission of Colonel Bello, the inmates were released.
Ikani said: “We have to secure the release of these 32 inmates because they have just civil cases from the Kontagora medium Prisons in Niger State.
“The cases against the inmates were minor cases like street fighting, night crawling and thuggery and all of them were put in the prison this year.”
Speaking to the ex-convicts after their release, Ikani urged them to be law abiding in the society to avoid future reoccurrences.
He said the foundation would rehabilitate the inmates and train them on various skills to enable them get integrated into the society.
The DG further stated that the foundation would continue to ensure that the youths in the state are adequately reoriented to become leaders in their given profession.
The inmates, who expressed happiness after regaining their freedom, pledged to be of good behaviour in order to forestall future occurrence.
The Foundation also donated items like grains, beverages, toiletries, blankets, bathing soaps and serving plates to the prisons for the upkeep of the remaining inmates in the prison.
Two hundred and fifty uniforms were sewn for the inmates.
