A group, the Goodluck Voters’ Forum, an official campaign affiliate of the Peoples Democratic Party and the President Goodluck Campaign Organisation, has fixedFebruary 7 to 9 this year as national fasting and prayer days.
The national fasting and prayers, the Forum explained on Thursday in Abuja, is for all Nigerians to appeal to God to bring lasting peace and development to the country.
A statement by the Forum said: “We are tired of incessant killings of innocent citizens by Boko Haram militants.
“Moreover, now that the elections are around the corner, we need God’s hand more than ever before to facilitate the election of good leaders and also to achieve successful and peaceful elections in Nigeria.”
The Forum, in the statement signed by its National Coordinator, Engr. Esanerovo Agbodo, said: “It is only with God that all things are possible. So, we need God to move us from a developing nation to a developed nation. And to achieve this, electing good leaders and sustaining democracy is key to attaining this glorious status of a developed nation.
“Therefore, our prayers is that God intervenes to elect faithful and responsible leaders across Nigeria.
“On these days slated for the special event, we enjoin Nigerians nationwide and abroad to observe the fasting and prayers session till 6.00 pm daily wherever they may be.
“However, our stand is that President Goodluck Jonathan has done well in both the economy and in the polity and so should be re-elected in the 2015 presidential election.
“Our interest is for the will of God to be done in Nigeria.
“Jonathan has promoted free and fair elections within the PDP and in other elections as demonstrated in Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Edo and in the past gubernatorial elections and others.
“The roads,rails and airports construction under the Jonathan’s administration are unequaled.
“The abandoned rail transportation for decades is back. Major roads and Airports have been constructed in addition to achievements in the educational sector among others.”
