The Peoples Democratic Movement on Friday said it was shocked that the Independent National Electoral Commission listed its withdrawn candidate for the Osun State governorship election, Oludare Timothy Akinola, for the poll slated for August 9.
A statement by the PDM’s General Secretary, Dr. Oluwole Akinwumi, said the decision to withdraw Akinola was taken as far back as June and it was thus surprising that INEC could still go ahead to list him for the poll.
Akinwumi said the position of the party was properly communicated to INEC and its Chairman, Prof. Attahiru Jega, and Akinola himself.
The party added in the statement: “The party is therefore surprised to find listed in a newspaper publication, the name of Mr Akinola as one of the 20 gubernatorial candidates participating in the August 9 governorship election in Osun State on the platform of PDM.
“This press statement is issued to draw attention to the earlier decision of the party to withdraw Mr Akinola from contesting the election on its platform and to dissociate the Party and its members in Osun State from the newspaper report.
“Our party members in Osun State and the general public are please to take note.”
