Giwa Football Club of Jos on Sunday lost 0-1 at home to FC IfeanyiUbah of Nnewi in a 2015/2016 Nigeria Professional Football League Match Day 1 fixture.
The loss is the four-year-old club’s first home loss since its promotion to the NPFL two years ago.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the lone goal was an own goal by the team’s captain, Ibrahim Akide, in the second minute of the match.
The resilient visitors then held onto the early lead till the end of the match, in spite of the domination of possession and many offensive moves by Giwa FC.
Speaking after the match, FC IfeanyiUbah’s Technical Adviser, Mitchko Dobrev, who described Giwa FC as a good side, said the match was a difficult one for his team.
Dobrev said the game could have ended in a draw, but his side got the goal, which separated the two teams.
Gbenga Ogunbote, the Technical Adviser of Giwa FC, said his team was unlucky not to have won the match.
Ogunbote said his side played very well throughout the 90 minutes in spite of the loss.
He however said his club, in spite of the setback, was more determined to clinch a continental ticket.
“If records are broken and we have lost our first match at home, records will also be made and we will qualify for a continental ticket at the end of the season,” the coach said.
