Niboro applauds NEMA’s rapid response to disaster

The Managing Director of the News Agency of Nigeria, Ima Niboro, has lauded the rapid response of the National Emergency Management Agency to the various disasters in the country.
Niboro gave the commendation when he received NEMA’s Director-General, Malam Muhammad Sani-Sidi, at the agency’s headquarters on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said: “We in NAN are very proud of the work you have done and we commend you and your management for your foresightedness.
“That you people are even there even before the media.
“Usually, the media gets there first and NEMA comes behind but now NEMA gets there first before any organisation and agency.
“This is a very brilliant way of working and I commend you specially for this.
“NEMA we have today can rank with any international emergency service.”
Niboro assured the director-general of NAN’s continued support in sensitizing Nigerians to NEMA’s mandate and its activities.
“We will give you support and let the world know the fantastic work you are doing and will continue to do so,” Niboro said.
In his remarks, Sani-Sidi said the visit was informed by the need to shed more light on the activities of his agency and further cement the existing cordial relationship between the two sister agencies.
He explained that NEMA had been facing a number of challenges with the insurgency in the North East part of the country as the most recent.
He said: “Part of my reasons for coming to visit you is to shed more light on some of the things we do as an agency of (the Federal) Government that has the responsibility of management of disaster in all its ramifications.
“For us as an agency, we believe strongly that whatever you do, no matter the effort you put in your working place based on your mandate as an agency, if you are not being seen, if you are not being heard, it’s as good as not being there.
“We believe that Nigerians have the right to know exactly what is happening and what agencies of government are doing.
“We as an agency have been confronted with quite a number of challenges, which we usually call the 21st century challenges.
“We had the 2012 flooding, the biggest natural disaster we have experienced in the history of this country, and now we are confronted with the issue of insurgency in some parts of the country.
“Insurgency is not just peculiar to Nigeria.
“It’s a global phenomenon.
“Thanks be to God, the security agencies, the military and other stakeholders are doing their best to ensure sure (that) we get over this menace.”
Sani-Sidi also commended NAN’s role in the dissemination of useful information and enlightenment of Nigerians.
