LASG directs private school proprietors to comply with academic calendar

The Lagos State Ministry of Education on Tuesday warned proprietors of private schools to adhere strictly to the resumption and closing dates in the 2013/2014 academic calendar or be sanctioned.
Semasa Sutton, the Director, Basic Education Services, Lagos State Ministry of Education, gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos
Sutton said that the ministry had directed all public and private schools to resume on September 23, for the 2013/2014 session.
The director said that in order to realise this, report cards of pupils must be issued latest by August 16.
He said that schools that flout the directive would be sanctioned appropriately.
Sutton said: “All schools in Lagos State must follow the new academic calendar from next session.
“The era whereby some private schools resume whenever they want is over.
“We have informed all stakeholders, especially National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools, and they must comply.
“Any school that violates the directive will be penalised.”
NAN recalls that the ministry had earlier in the 2012/2013 academic session, shut some private schools for not complying with a similar directive
The National Association of Private Schools had directed its members to resume on April 29 contrary to the May 6 date announced by the government.
Consequently, some private schools in Lagos metropolis were shut for not complying with the directive.
