The Acting Provost, Kwara State College of Education, llorin, Dr. Jimoh Ayinla-Agaka, says the institution is currently owing N99.2 million to its workers who are members of two cooperative societies and lleya savings scheme.
Ayinla-Agaka confirmed this in llorin on Thursday during a news conference following protest at the institution.
The protest was embarked upon by hundreds of workers of the college on Wednesday over unpaid deductions from their salaries for cooperatives and lleya savings.
The Provost however described the protest as politically motivated, claiming that previous managements of the college have been using the cooperative and lleya savings scheme fund to run the affairs of the institution.
Ayinla-Agaka said since he became the acting Provost of the College in May 2021, he had settled inherited debts, including the cooperative and lleya savings scheme to the tune of N117 million.
“The management of the College has been managing to pay the monthly cheque off dues of all Unions and Societies from its meagre resources and l inherited backlog of debt. including cooperatives, and N46.5 million had so far been paid to them,” the Provost said, adding: “The lleya savings scheme the College is currently owing workers is N10 million and Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq is currently assisting the College to settle this before Eid-el-Kabir.”
The Provost appealed to protecting workers to remain calm as the state government and the management were addressing their grievances.
Reacting to the development, the President of the College Multi purpose Cooperative Society, Oluwatoyin Sanusi, said they embarked on Wednesday’s protest in response to the request of the cooperators.
Sanusi said: “The protest was not intended to run down the college management but to demand for our money, especially those who are willing to slaughter rams during the forthcoming Eid-el-Kabir.”
She appealed to the management of the institution to pay all outstanding of almost N100 million owed cooperatives for peace to continue to reign in the college.
