Prof. Ibrahim Sheka, the Chairman, Kano State Independent Electoral Commission, on Monday, said the commission would recruit over 32,000 ad hoc staff for the forthcoming local government election in the state.
The chairman told News Agency of Nigeria in Kano that the commission had screened candidates and received all necessary materials for the election, scheduled for February 10.
Sheka said KANSIEC had already recruited 44 electoral officers and their assistants in the 44 councils, a total of 88 officers.
He added that the commission was presently in the process of recruiting returning officers from the wards across the 44 councils areas.
According to him, electoral officers have been mandated to recruit returning officers and polling clerks that will handle the ballot boxes from the over 10,000 polling units in the councils.
He explained that the commission was currently in the process of recruiting presiding officers, while those already recruited would be trained on Tuesday and Wednesday to prepare them for the February 10 election.
The KANSIEC chairman said the electoral body had taken adequate measures on security issues, saying it would collaborate with security agencies in the state to ensure peaceful election.
He urged political party officials and the public to cooperate with KANSIEC for hitch-free election.
He said that students writing the ongoing West African Examination and their supervisors were exempted from the movement restriction on election day.
In a related development, the police command in Kano State said it had received deployed officers from neighbouring states for the election.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Magaji Majia, told NAN in Kano on Monday that the deployment of police personnel from neighbouring states was part of collaborative efforts to ensure hitch-free election.
He said the command was consulting with stakeholders, especially politicians, on the need to have peaceful local government election in the state.
Majia said: “One of the measures we have taken is to arrest political thugs capable of destabilising the election.
“Last year, we arrested over 890 political thugs in the state, from which, many were prosecuted, while some surrendered.”
He explained that those thugs who surrendered were provided with funds to start petty businesses to encourage them to desist from going back to criminal activities.
He added that some of the arrested political thugs led the command to arrest kidnap gang whose notorious activities had been of grave concern to the people of the state.
