The Inter Party Advisory Council has rejected plans by the state government to extend the tenure of caretaker committees in the 16 local councils in the state by three months.
A statement jointly signed by the council’s Chairman, Alhaji AbdulRahman Omotosho; Secretary, Yinka Adepoju; and Public Relations Officer, AbdulMumini Onagun, in llorin on Monday condemned the plan.
It called for the conduct of election in all the 16 councils instead of extending the period of the present caretaker committees.
It described the constitution and extension of the period of the committees as unconstitutional and illegal.
The council noted that the caretaker committees currently in place would endanger democracy in the state and deprive the electorate of reaping the dividends of democracy.
It, therefore, called on the state government and the State lndependent Electoral Commission to put in place necessary machinery for the conduct of election in all the 16 councils in the state.
The council also appealed to the government to address acute water shortage being experience in parts of the state capital.
The House of Assembly had in November, 2016 approved the constitution of caretaker committees for the local government councils for a period of three months.
