INEC planning massive awareness campaigns ahead 2015 polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission is planning massive awareness campaigns to shore up public participation in the 2015 elections.
According to Samuel Madaki, its Resident Electoral Commissioner in Bauchi State, special attention shall be paid to the voters registration and constituency delimitation.
Madaki, who spoke during a visit to the state Governor, Malam Isa Yuguda, in Bauchi, said that INEC would meet with traditional rulers, political parties, NGOs, media organisations and members of the public to solicit their support.
He said: “The commission has already concluded arrangement to commence the registration of new voters, hence the need for massive awareness to ensure massive participation.
“With regard to constituency delimitation, INEC has already set up two committees for that exercise.”
To ensure a credible, free and fair and election in Bauchi, he said that the commission would soon resuscitate the inter-agency consultative committee on election security.
Membership of the committee, to be headed by the Commissioner of Police, will include representatives of the army, the State Security Service, as well as other security agencies in the state, he said.
“The committee is expected to work out strategies toward adequate security during elections both at the state and local government levels,” he said.
In his remarks, Yuguda commended INEC for its work and said that a timely preparation was crucial to the success of the 2015 polls.
He assured INEC of the government’s full support in meeting its mandate and called for special attention to the state during the constituency delimitation exercise, especially since its population had risen to seven million from its initial four million.
