Chief Orji Kalu, former governor of Abia, has called on the political class to uphold the tenets of democracy in order to build a prosperous Nigeria.
Kalu, who is also a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, said that the will of the people must prevail at all times if Nigeria must take its rightful position in the comity of nations.
Kalu, via a statement issued by his Special Adviser, Kunle Oyewumi, to mark Nigeria’s 58 Independence anniversary and made available to the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Abuja, also decried hate speeches.
He faulted perpetrators of hate campaign in the country, stressing that national interest should be placed above selfish ambitions.
Kalu said: “As we mark Nigeria’s 58th independence anniversary, it is important to reflect on the past for the sake of rebuilding the nation.
“We need to understudy and implement programmes and policies of Nigeria’s founding fathers.
“Leadership position should be seen as a clarion call to service and not an opportunity for self-aggrandisement.
“Nigeria is a blessed country in all its ramifications. The diverse nature of the country is indeed a plus.
“The people must resist attempts by selfish politicians to cause disunity among ethnic groups in the country.
“We must continue to live in peace and harmony.
“Nigeria has come to stay as a multi-ethnic and multi-religious country and no amount of unpatriotic acts can change that reality.
“Both the governed and the government must play their patriotic roles in order to build a decent society.”
The former governor, while wishing Nigerians a rewarding celebration, urged governments at all levels to live up to expectations.
