The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika, on Sunday called for increased budgetary allocation to security outfits in the country because of the prevailing security challenges.
Ihejirika made the call at the graduation ceremony of the Basic Counter-terrorism Course 12 of the Nigerian Army Training Centre in Kontagora, Niger State.
He said that more officers needed to be trained in counter-terrorism to meet the level of manpower required to cope with the current security challenges in the country.
The army chief, who was represented by the Commander, Corps of Artillery, Major General A.K. Kwaskebe, commended the Federal Government for funding various security agencies in the country, stressing, however, the need to increase budgetary allocation to the agencies.
He said: “Government is trying its best in terms of resources that is why the training is going on as expected but it is not easy to train people for such challenges that we face today in our country.
“We appreciate support from government as well as the entire citizens of Nigeria.
“Mr President has been funding the Nigerian Army and we appreciate his efforts.”
He said that the army had recorded a lot of improvements as demonstrated by young officers during the internal security operations in North East Nigeria, which had led to improved security there.
Ihejirika said: “That is to show you that the training here and the products from this place are impacting positively on our war against terror.
“We need more than the number we have trained so far.
“The number of officers being trained is insufficient.
“In order words, we need more people for training so as to beef up security the more in our country.”
A total of 187 officers, including five officers from the Central African Republic, participated in the two months training programme.
