Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State on Sunday emerged the winner of the Peoples Democratic Party’s primary for Abia Central Senatorial District.
Orji, who was the sole aspirant in the contest, polled 221 votes.
Declaring the result, the Chairman of the Electoral Panel, Chief Ndidi Okereke, explained that 222 out of 230 delegates, including 36 statutory delegates, were accredited for the exercise.
The Senate Committee Chairman on Information, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, also picked the ticket for Abia South Senatorial District for a possible third term in the Senate.
A former House of Representatives member, Chief Mao Ohuabunwa, defeated the incumbent, Senator Uche Chukwumerije, to clinch the ticket for Abia North Senatorial District.
In an acceptance speech at the end of the election, which took place at the Umuahia Township Stadium, the governor thanked the people of the area for the confidence reposed in him.
Orji said he would cherish the event all his life “because it was not his making but the decision of my people that I should proceed to Abuja after my administration as governor in 2015.
“I will cherish this honour and trust all my life.”
Orji assured the people that he would not betray the trust reposed in him but would give them effective representation in the senate.
Hei described the process of the primary as “transparent”, saying that the exercise had further deepened democracy in the state.
Meanwhile, the following aspirants emerged winners of the House of Representatives primaries of PDP in Abia: Chief Sam Onuigbo (Ikwuanoa/Umuahia), Chief Nkole Uko (Arochukwu/Ohafia) and Rep. Nkiru Onyejiocha (Isuikwuato/Umunneochi).
Others are Rep. Nnenna Ukeje (Bende) are Chief Uzo Azubuike (Aba North/Aba South), Chief Solomon Adaelu (Obingwa/Osisioma), Chief Uzoma Abonta (Ukwa East/Ukwa West) and Chief Darlington Nwokocha (Isialangwa North /Isialangwa South).
