The African champions, Super Eagles’ status in world football again nosedived as the team dropped out of the top 40 in the latest edition of the rankings released on Thursday.
The Super Eagles went down four more places to 41st this month, after moving down a spot in the December standings.
Nigeria is now sixth on the continent, with Africa’s minnow and Nations Cup debutant, Cape Verde, taking over the fifth spot.
Cote d’ Ivoire maintained their number one position while Ghana, Algeria, Mali top the log.
It is however believed that a good showing at the African Nations Championship, which was recently upgraded to a level-A competition by FIFA, could influence the reigning AFCON champions’ position in the February rankings.
Meanwhile, there were no changes in the world’s top 25, with Spain still comfortable at number one and Ivory Coast topping the African table.
