An Upper Area Court sitting in Kasuwan Nama, Jos, Plateau State on Monday sentenced a labourer, Patrick Afo, 19, to nine months imprisonment for stealing.
Judge Irene Pati sentenced the convict after he admitted guilt of charges of burglary and theft and begged for leniency.
Pati, however, gave the convict an option of N15,000 fine for the first charge of shop breaking and the option of N10,000 fine for the second charge of theft.
Earlier, the Police Prosecutor, Inspector Monday Dabit, told the court that the case was reported at the A Division Police Station, Jos on January 31, 2022 by the complainants: Angela Okeke and three others.
Dabit told the court that the complainants said on January 30, the defendant along with his accomplice, John Daniel, now at large, burgled their various shops and made away with items valued at N83,440.
The police prosecutor told the court that during police investigation, the defendant confessed committing the crime.
The offence, according to Dabit, contravenes sections 59 and 272 of the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria.
