Barcelona will be fined £2,700 after Lionel Messi paid tribute to the late Diego Maradona.

Messi, 33, celebrated a powerful strike against Osasuna on Sunday by taking off his home shirt to reveal a 1993 Newell’s Old Boys top in homage to his hero, who passed away aged 60 last week.

Maradona played for the Argentinian side at the end of his career, while Messi featured for the club when he was 13.

But Barcelona have been hit with a bill of €3,000 (£2,700) after breaking Royal Spanish Football Federation rules regarding celebrations.

Players are not permitted to lift their shirt to reveal adverts, slogans or any form of messages under the regulations.

After the game, Messi posted a photo of his Nou Camp tribute alongside an older image of Maradona sporting a Newell’s shirt.

Speaking after the 4-0 win, Barcelona boss Ronald Koeman said: “It was a great moment.

“First, for the goal that Leo scored and then for the gesture he had for the death of Diego Maradona.

“He had surely been thinking of what he would do.

“For me, it was a great moment in every way.”

Messi also paid tribute to Maradona on the evening of his passing last week.

Sharing a snap with his former Argentina manager, the six-time Ballon d’Or winner said: “A very sad day for all Argentines and for football.

“He leaves us but does not leave, because Diego is eternal.

“I keep all the beautiful moments lived with him and I wanted to take the opportunity to send my condolences to all his family and friends. RIP.”

Messi’s rival Cristiano Ronaldo wrote: “Today I say goodbye to a friend and the world says goodbye to an eternal genius.

:One of the best ever. An unparalleled magician. He leaves too soon, but leaves a legacy without limits and a void that will never be filled. Rest in peace, ace. You will never be forgotten.”
