Some members of the Anambra State House of Assembly have decried the carpet-crossing by two legislators from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Grand Alliance.
Hon. Obinna Emenakia (Anambra East) and Hon. Vivian Okadigbo (Oyi) on Tuesday decamped to APGA during the assembly plenary.
Some of the members who spoke in Awka on Friday described the action as an “affront to the assembly”.
Hon. Valentine Ayika (PDP-Njikoka 1) said the action was condemnable, adding that they should not have done it on the floor of the assembly.
Ayika said: “The action is condemnable in its totality.
“The legislative chamber should not be turned into a political field.
“It is a desecration of the assembly.
“The action has ridiculed the chamber.
“I am totally ashamed at the crop of politicians we have today as leaders.
“We are supposed to be standing in for our people at all times, but unfortunately some politicians abandon the people at the slightest sign of insecurity to their selfish interest.
“I am not against anyone cross-carpeting, but it should be done in a decent manner and in accordance with the law.”
Hon. Ebele Obi (APC-Idemili South) said the action showed that the assembly was being taken for a ride by the ruling party in the state.
“Decamping in the hallowed chamber in the presence of the governor is a show of insecurity, lack of patriotism, non-commitment to structures and lack of trust in oneself,” Obi said.
Hon. Gabriel Onyenwife, (PDP-Ayamelum) said the action was against the constitution as amended.
