Alleged US conviction: We ready to probe Omo-Agege — Senate

The Senate on Tuesday said it will swing into action to probe the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, over allegations that he was convicted for felony in a California court in the United States, if a petition to that effect is submitted to it.
The Senate Spokesman, Senator Godiya Akwashiki, made this known while responding to questions from newsmen over the alleged conviction in 1998.
A coalition of civil society groups had recently canvassed for the resignation of Omo-Agege over his alleged conviction for felony while practicing as a lawyer in the United States in 1998.
Akwashiki gave an assurance that the Senate will investigate such allegation once any individual or group sends in a petition to that effect.
He said: “We are lawmakers.
“We should be seen working within the purview of the land.
“The issue (of the Deputy Senate President) happened in the US.
“I don’t know anything about it.
“I read on it on the net.
“I’m not speaking for American court, not even judiciary arm of government in Nigeria.
“Just like somebody said, somebody petitioned the DSS (Department of State Services).
“I’m not a spokesperson of the DSS.
“I’m speaking for the ninth Senate.
“If somebody submits a petition against the DSP to the Senate, I want to assure you that we will look into it.
“For now, it is not an issue of the Senate.”
