Facts are beginning to emerge on why the Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, alleged that Zenith Bank sponsored his election in 2014.
Sources in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission told The Eagle Online that the major strategy by Fayose is to latch onto the excuse that the Bank sponsored the election to discredit the fact that he received money from the Office of the National Security Adviser during the tenure of former President Goodluck Jonathan.
Retired Colonel Sambo Dasuki was the NSA at the period.
The source within the EFCC said trying to rope in Zenith Bank into the sponsorship of the election could not be proved as there are no facts that any personal fund from the Bank was deposited into the Account.
Rather, the source said all the funds traced to Fayose came from the NSA’s office into the account.
The source said this is why Fayose’s wife, Feyisetan, would soon be invited for questioning as N100 million out of the money had been traced to her.
The account through which Feyisetan received the money is being operated alongside her husband.
The money, said to have been received from the ONSA, was paid into the Zenith Bank account of Spotless Investment Limited on June 17, 2014.
Fayose’s associate, Abiodun Agbele, was said to have paid the money in.
The account has since been frozen by the EFCC.
The source said: “There is no way you can hold Zenith Bank responsible for anything in this case.
“Banks are there for them to do business.
“It is not possible for the Bank to refuse to open accounts for any client once the basic requirements are met.
“That is why they are there in the first place.
“So also can the Bank not be held responsible once it performs its own responsibility of informing the relevant bodies once transactions beyond the threshold are reported.
“What is obvious now is that Fayose is fighting tooth and nail to dislodge the allegations of involvement in sharing of security funds, now famously known as Dasukigate.
“And his strategy is without borders.
“But we will not allow him to get away with it.
“The money must be refunded and he will be held to account along with his partners in crime.”
