Fifteen farmers kidnapped in Mgbuji Eha-Amufu Community in Isi-Uzo local government area of Enugu State, South East Nigeria on July 18 have been freed.
The spokesman of the Community, Chijioke Ogbodo, revealed that the farmers, who were kidnapped by suspected herdsmen, were freed after payment of N2 million ransom.
He narrated that the gunmen, masquerading as herdsmen, abducted their victims near Mgbuji town on their way to their farms.
Ogbodo said the abductors demanded N30 million, but the families were able to raise N2 million.
While lamenting the constant attack on the local farmers, the community leader said: “After so many pleas because the security agencies abandoned us. Last week they were able to accept the N2 million naira. We thank God that no one was harmed.”
Mgbuji and neighbouring communities in Eha-Amufu have been constantly attacked by marauding herders since September 2021, leaving many people gruesomely killed, several houses and properties worth millions of naira destroyed.
