Terrorism: Jonathan calls for cooperation from Nigeria’s neighbours

President Goodluck Jonathan has called for greater cooperation between Nigeria and its neighbouring countries in the fight against terrorism.
The President made the call on Friday in Abuja when he received a special message from Cameroonian President, Paul Biya, delivered by Biya’s Special Envoy, Emmanuel Sadi Rene.
A statement issued by Dr. Reuben Abati, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, quoted Jonathan as saying that Boko Haram and other criminal groups, which operate from the border, must be seen as common threats to the region.
Jonathan said Nigeria and its neighbours must take urgent action to harmonise their strategies and efforts to roll-back the menace of Boko Haram and other violent criminal gangs that operate along the borders.
He added: “The issue of Boko Haram remains worrisome.
“If it is not properly handled, it could affect the security of neighbouring countries.
“We therefore expect maximum cooperation from all countries within our region to rout the sect.”
Rene, who is Cameroon’s Minister of Interior, assured Jonathan of his country’s commitment to fully cooperate with Nigeria to combat all forms of terrorism and cross-border criminality as he delivered Biya’s message.
He also assured the President that the Cameroonian government would never allow its territory to become a safe haven for terrorists or a base for destabilisation of Nigeria.
