“As a young woman, making music has always been more than just vibes. It’s been a blessing. However, having to always keep a third eye open has been a big challenge. Like any other male-dominated field, it’s hard to know if my talent and expertise will be enough to get me to the top,” says Nikita.
The programme extends resources and opportunities to women artists, amplifies their music, and exposes their music to a global listenership through EQUAL Africa and, EQUAL Global playlists.
Simi joins other Nigerian artists, Tiwa Savage, Ayra Starr, Asa, and FAVE to be part of EQUAL Africa, which aims to spotlight and amplify the voices of talented African female artists making waves in the music scene. She also becomes only the second African artist after Tiwa Savage to be named as an EQUAL Global and EQUAL Africa artist.
This accolade comes off the back of Nomfundo’s debut Afropop album, Amagama, released in January this year. She joins DBN Gogo as the second South African artist chosen to be part of the platform’s flagship programme that amplifies the voices of talented African women.
This announcement comes off the back of Fave’s popularity and fame since the release of her breakthrough hit single Baby Riddim which was released in September 2021 via emPawa Africa.
In line with Spotify’s bid to promote gender equality in the music industry and showcase influential female musicians, the global streaming platform welcomes Asa to join the EQUAL programme’s list of formidable African women making waves in music.
The programme, aimed at providing a platform to highlight women in music, sees Spotify welcoming the popular AmaPiano DJ as the first South African artist to join its growing roster of influential female creators, which includes Nigeria’s Tiwa Savage and US rapper Saweetie.
