The Standards Organisation of Nigeria on Friday condemned the unhygienic practices by some fast food outlets in Niger, saying they were endangering the lives of patrons.
The SON Coordinator in the state, Badawale Sunday, told the News Agency of Nigeria in Minna that the surveillance exercises carried out indicated that many of the outlets were yet to imbibe good hygienic practices.
Sunday said: “Our experience through surveillance inspections have shown that much still remains to be learnt as some of the fast foods outfits or restaurants in the state are not practising Good Hygienic Practices.’’
Sunday said that some of the unhygienic practices include operating in dirty environment, dispensing water with dirty filters and bad personal hygiene.
He identified others as not using the right utensils and inadequate cleaning after usage.
The coordinator said that non-compliant outlets had been warned and compelled to comply with the right hygienic requirements.
He also said that a sensitisation workshop had been proposed for stakeholders in the sector.
Sunday said that the ongoing compliance monitoring of materials and products in supermarkets and open markets was a continuous exercise to verify the various products being displayed for sale.
