SON burns 960kg of substandard stockfish meal in Ondo

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria on Tuesday said it had burnt 960 kilogrammes of substandard stockfish meal in Ondo State.

The state Coordinator of SON, Paul Oke, who led the team that carried out the burning, said that the action was to display the readiness of the governments against substandard and fake goods.

Oke said that the burnt items were seized after a buyer complained to the organisation about the substandard meal products he bought.

He said the effect of the products would have been disastrous to fishes and humans if consumed.

He said: “If these products are consumed, especially by fishes, there will not be good returns from them and investors will not get value from them because the fishes will die.

“Also, people consuming the fishes will be affected too and that is why we are burning the items to forestall any danger.”

According to Oke, SON is still monitoring the products in the market for withdrawal.

He urged producers and manufacturers to ensure that their products were certified, in good quality and have standard content for consumption.

Oke said that the Federal Government was resolute in its decision to get rid of substandard and fake goods from the Nigerian markets.

Also, Tola Olootu, the complainant appreciated SON for the job well done, saying that he was able to get better products for replacement from the producer.

Olootu said that no money was collected from him by SON, advising consumers to always voice out whenever they were being cheated or short-changed.
