The committees on the Steven Oronsaye reports have advised the Federal Government to place an embargo on creation of new Federal Parastatals, Agencies and Commissions.
Ama Pepple, Chairman, Committee on review of new Parastatals, Agencies and Commissions, said this on Tuesday.
Pepple’s committee, created after the submission of the report on PACs, made the recommendation while submitting the reports to the Federal Government in Abuja.
Pepple explained that the recommendations of the committees were strictly guided by the terms of reference and focused on reducing cost of governance, improving cost efficiency, eliminating duplication or overlapping functions.
Other recommendations, she said, were propriety/impropriety of government funding professional associations, direct the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission to adhere strictly to the Act establishing it and henceforth desist from approving salaries.
It also included strict adherence by political office holders to the terms of their engagement, especially in relation to appointment of Aides.
According to her, the major consideration for the assignment is the imperative for the Federal Government to address the drivers of high cost of governance.
People said at the submission of the report to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha: “SGF sir, even while we were concluding our assignments, we had recommended the creation of the Youth Development Commission, which is under the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
“And also the Elderly Persons Commission, and already we have established a National Senior Citizens Commission.”
Receiving the reports, Mustapha lauded the committees for their commitments to the assignments they were tasked to perform for the nation.
Mustapha said the reports would create opportunity to move quickly with concluding the problems that accumulated for 10 years.
He said: “Like the Petroleum Industry Act that took more than two decades to conclude, this administration will also conclude this and timely too before it becomes embroiled in other matters.
“To take this forward, Government receives the reports of these two committees.
“For the report of the Committee on the Review of the White Paper on restructuring and rationalisation of Federal Government PACs submitted in 2014, your recommendations are noted and government’s position would be made known as soon as possible.
“On the other hand, a White Paper Committee would be set up to review the report of the Committee on Parastatals, Agencies and Commissions created between 2012 and October 2021.”
Mustapha assured the committees that all outstanding actions to finalise the issue of restructuring and rationalisation would be addressed in the shortest possible time.
