A Senate delegation on Thursday paid a condolence visit to the Osun State House of Assembly following the death of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade.
Senator Adamu Abdullahi, who led the delegation to the Assembly, described the Ooni’s death as a monumental loss to the nation.
Abdullahi said the Yoruba nation as well as the country as a whole would miss the Ooni’s wisdom and fatherly leadership.
He said: “The death of Oba Sijuwade is a monumental loss to Nigeria.
“We will miss his wisdom, leadership and his capacity in the development of the nation.”
Abdullahi also commended the lawmakers for their support and cooperation with the executive in moving the state forward.
In his response, Hon. Najeem Salaam, the Speaker of the Assembly, commended the Senate leadership for deeming it fit to send a delegation to commiserate with the Osun State Government.
Salaam said the visit was a pointer to the fact that the legislative arm of government was committed to sustaining the unity of the country irrespective of background or race.
He said: “For the leadership of the Senate to deem it fit to do this in honour of late Ooni, it shows that there is no other way of fostering unity than what you have displayed through your visit.
“The death of Ooni is a loss to the whole nation because of the role he played in the sustenance of our nation.
“He is a great leader that we will all miss.”
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that an interdenominational service was held for the late Ooni on August 14.
The late monarch died in a London hospital on July 28.
