Ogun Assembly passes bill on child’s right

The Ogun State House of Assembly on Tuesday in Abeokuta, the state capital, passed into law a bill for the protection, enforcement and advancement of the rights and welfare of the child in the state.
The Chairman, House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development, Hon. Elizabeth Anifowose, said the bill would ensure that the Nigerian child was protected from any form of abuse.
Anifowose said that if assented to by the state Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, the bill would give a child due recognition in policies and decision-making process that affects his or her life.
She added that it would also provide opportunity to children to live a better life, adding that it would assist them to aspire to the highest level in life.
In his remark, the Speaker, Hon. Suraj Adekunbi, said that one of the hallmarks of democracy was that citizens had the right to be part of the decisions that affected their lives.
Adekunbi said: “We are encouraging a system of governance and lawmaking that reflects the voices, wishes, interest and concern of the entire population.”
The House also passed into law a bill to amend the Ogun Pension Reform Law, 2006.
The Chairman, House Committee on Establishments and Public Service Matters, Samuel Solarin, said the bill would correct abnormalities in the pension law.
He said that with the passage of the bill, pension funds deducted from workers salaries would be given back to workers when they retire.
He said the amendment in the contributory pension scheme in the state would put an end to the era of pensioners dying while queuing to receive their entitlements.
The speaker ordered that the clean copy of the two bills be forwarded to Amosun for his assent.
