The proposed February 16, 2013 kick off date for the Nigeria Premier League 2013 season may not after all be realistic as the interim management committee, headed by Hon. Nduka Irabor, is far from being ready.
The Eagle Online gathered that barely a week to the proposed kick off date, many issues that could ensure smooth take off of the season are yet to be fully addressed.
A competent source close to the Abuja Secretariat of the NPL, who sought for anonymity, said on Sunday that it is certain that the February 16 date is no longer feasible.
“I can say that there are no signs that the league will start on February 16 as proposed by the Interim management committee. The date could be shifted by at least a week,” said our source.
One of the issues that may force the postponement of the NPL season include the need to organise a seminar for referees and match commissioners prior to the commencement of the season.
Also the mandatory pre-season meeting between the organisers and clubs owners is yet to get a specific date.
“How can we start the season when the IMC members are yet to meet with the clubs owners and even the secretariat staffs?”
Our source however attributed the seeming redundancy in NPL to lack of funds.
Recently, Globacom was announced as the title rights owners of the Nigeria premier league in a multi million naira deal that will run for four years.
