NIN: Anambra Coordinator decries low registration in South-East

The National Identity Management Commission has expressed concern over the poor turnout of residents in the South-East geo-political zone to obtain their National Identification Numbers.
The Anambra Coordinator of NIMC, Bibian Ekweonu, expressed this concern during a one-day sensitisation programme organised for the field officers of the National Orientation Agency in Awka on Monday.
Ekweonu noted that registration was free and meant for every Nigerian, including the children.
He said: “The commission is targeting to register at least 180 million Nigerians by 2020 and 80 million people by 2019.”
She, therefore, urged Nigerians to register and further requested mothers to take the advantage of the ongoing holiday to register their children using their mother or father’s national identification numbers.
However, the coordinator warned the people not to register with commercial business centres, but visit their genuine NIMC centrer located near them.
Ekweonu said the sensitisation exercise for NOA officers was to further ensure continued enlightenment of the general public, especially the grassroots on the importance and use of the NIN.
