Nigeria’s Moses Peter beat 61 other players to win the African Scrabble Championship, in Kiriyanga, Kenya and a cash prize of 350,000 Kenyan Schillings.
The Akwa Ibom player won 26 out of the 32 games played to finish ahead of his closest rival and former World Scrabble Champion, Jighere Wellington.
Wellington won 22 games, losing 10 in a gruelling contest that had seven Nigerians in the top ten.
Former national champion Eta Oghenekaro was third with 21 wins.
The best non-Nigerian in the top ten was Allan Oyende from Kenya who placed 4th.
Moses has had a good season coming second at the World Championship in England and winning Asaph Zadok National Championship, in July.
He is expected to be joined at the season ending Alchemist Cup, in Malaysia by Saidu Ayorinde, Olatunde Oduwole, Eta Karo and Nsikak Etim.
Wellington will return home to play for Delta State at the National Sports Festival, in Abuja from the 9th to the 15th December.
