The Team Nigeria squad has won three gold medals as the 8th African Armwrestling Championships flagged off officially on Friday at the Mokolade Okoya Thomas Indoor Sports Hall, Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos.
Team Nigeria’s golds were won by Jacinta Umunakwe, 70kg Women Left Arm; Victoria Johnson 80+kg, also in the women’s class; while Olubode Fayowole won gold in the men’s 60kg class.
Team Nigeria in the first day of competition also won four silver and two bronze medals. Adebukola Adeyanju, Ibiyeye Oluwabukola, Ime Ntuk and Femi Akinsanya all won silver. Nigeria’s bronze medals were won by Nneka Samuel and Lukmon Isa.
Mali dominated events on the first day, winning six gold medals.
Cameroon, Egypt and Ghana are the other competitors.
The competition continues on Saturday with events in the Right Arm in 10 different weight categories.
