NERC issues seven firms with licences to generate 2,758MW

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission on Monday issued licences to seven firms for the generation of additional 2758 MW for the national grid under the National Independent Power Producers.
The companies are Calabar Generation Company Ltd (561mw), Benin Generation Company Ltd (450mw) and Egbema Generation Company Ltd (338mw).
Others are Gbarain Generation Company Ltd (225mw), Geregu Generation Company Ltd (434mw), Omoku Generation Company Ltd (250mw) and Omotosho Generation Company Ltd (500mw).
The chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, while issuing the incenses, called on the companies to take advantage of the opportunity offered by government and address the challenge of electricity inadequacy
Amadi said: “Let me emphasise that the entities being licensed today have a very critical role to play in the reform and growth of the sector.
“This additional capacity of 2758mw to the grid will increase the electricity available to consumers.
“This will in the long run improve the standard of living and businesses in the country.”
