Minister of Sports, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, has approved the extension of the tenure of the League Management Company.
The LMC was inaugurated on December 27, 2012 to reposition the Nigeria Professional Football League within one year.
Abdullahi, who gave the approval on Monday in Abuja while receiving a “progress of work report” from the LMC, said that managers of the company deserved the extension to enable them to consolidate on their achievements.
He told newsmen that the main objective of inaugurating the committee had almost been accomplished within a short space of time.
He said: “We have all seen the work the LMC has done and we are very happy.
“It is not written in any law that they (members of the league) should stay for this time.
“The period they have been given was in view of the assignment that they have.
“Now, they have done very well.
“I believe they will be given an opportunity to continue.
“But there are people who believe that we should go back to that era where we will be calling congress and voting, but that era is gone.
“Now we have a company.
“People have to aspire to lead the company.
“They should apply to be Chief Operating Officer or play a role in the company.
“The time the LMC has spent has been spent well and we are confident that it can still achieve more.
“So, we will give it the opportunity.”
The Minister pointed out that for the league to enjoy the patronage of sponsors, it must be able to consolidate on what it had achieved so far.
Abdullahi added: “If you don’t understand where you are coming from, you will probably not appreciate where you are.
“Today, I can say it loud and clear that this is the same league that less than a year ago we were asking clubs to pay the indemnities of referees.”
Abdullahi also urged club owners and other stakeholders to support an extension for the LMC.
