Men beat women in obtaining voter cards in FCT

Ndidi Okafor, the Director of Voter Education in the Independent National Electoral Commission in the Federal Capital Territory, says more men registered than women in the just concluded Continuous Voter Registration Exercise.
Okafor said in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Saturday in Abuja that 82,440 new voters registered in the FCT during the exercise.
According to her, out of the total number registered, 44,788 were males while 37,652 were females.
Okafor noted that the gender difference was new because the women were always higher than males in past exercises.
She said voter education was widely carried out in the FCT before the registration exercise, adding that a voter education desk was situated everywhere to sensitise the people on the need to register.
Okafor said campaign teams were also established in Churches, Mosques and the 62 registration areas to create awareness within the FCT.
She also said strategies were being put in place to ensure that more persons cast votes during the local government elections slated for March 19.
