Institute’s workers reject Director General

The Joint Workers Union of the Nigerian Institute of Leather and Science Technology, Zaria, Kaduna State have protested against renewal of the tenure of the institution’s Director-General, Dr. Isuwa Adamu.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Polytechnics are accusing the DG of misappropriation and maladministration.
The allegations were contained in a 21-page letter jointly signed by ASUP and SSANIP chairmen, Julius Jekada and Job Weyi respectively, addressed to the Minister of Science and Technology, Prof. Ita Okon-Bassey.
In the letter, the workers also accused the DG of illegal award of contracts.
According to them, Adamu had misappropriated millions of naira contrary to rule 316 (1) and (11) of the institution’s financial regulations.
They accused him of failing to remit internally generated revenue due to government and to release imprest to relevant officers for more than a year.
Other charges included alleged recruitment of unqualified staff in violation of the National Board for Technical Education regulations and victimisation of staff.
When contacted, the DG confirmed that a copy of the petition was sent to him by the unions but dismissed the allegations, saying that it was a calculated attempt to tarnish his image.
Adamu said: “We have authorities saddled with the responsibility of investigating such issues.
“On the financial scam, I can’t say I have or I have not misappropriated funds.
“Let the authorities concerned investigate.
“However, I am glad to inform you that I have served this institute to the best of my ability.”
