Group advocates speedy passage of Copyright Bill

Reproduction Rights Society of Nigeria has advocated for the immediate passage of Copyright Bill to address cases of online copyright infringement.
Prof. Olu Obafemi, the Group board Chairman, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Monday in Abuja.
Obafemi called on the National Assembly to consider the early ratification of the various copyright treaties particularly the World Intellectual Property Organisation treaties on internet.
He said this would address the peculiar problems of digital environments.
He said the group condemned the recent hacking into Segun Adeniyi’s book: “Against the Run of Play.”
Obafemi said: “The REPRONIG condemns this criminal act and is particularly worried that unless this trend is nipped in the bud, it portends grave danger for the book industry and the creative sector in Nigeria.
“REPROING therefore calls on relevant government agencies to address the problem with seriousness that it deserves and to prosecute any defaulters under the cybercrime Act of 2015 the Copyright Act and other extant criminal legislation.”
He however called on Nigerian authors to work together to reward creativity to recompense authors and publishers.
