The Plateau State branch of the National Union of Road Transport Workers is facing a leadership crisis.
A faction is calling on the State Executive Council to dissolve the inaugurated executive of Yelwa-Shendam.
The call for the dissolution of the Yelwa-Shadam Zone II was contained in a petition to the SEC of the Union, signed by Alhaji Ibrahim Kano, Yusuf Suleiman, Ya’u Ma’aji and all the 80 concerned members of the Union.
The faction members said election forms were not sold to them for the contest into the offices of the branch election and also no election or consensus was reached but the executive was just inaugurated by the SEC.
The petition said: “It should be noted also that while the said inauguration took place, the forms purported purchased by the Exco were not Filled and Submitted to the committee and up to the time we returned to Yelwa, the forms were not filled nor return.
“It smacks of a hiding agenda that people were sworn-in and inaugurated without their official forms being Filled and Submitted. We gathered these facts from the branch secretary.”
The faction alleged that both the Secretary of Shendam Local Government Council, the caretaker councillor representing Yelwa in the council, the leadership of All Progressives Congress, the relatives of state Governor, Simon Lalong, as well as the state treasurer of the Union were behind the problem.
“The Chairman on seat (nephew to Governor Simon Lalong), whose name is Yusuf Katungu, a brother to the governor by name Audu Luti, and also the junior brother to the governor in person of Alh Nuhu Kuka who is now the state treasurer of the Union have all been threaten us about the issue,” Suleiman said.
According to him the LGA’s APC Chairman, Awwalu Hamza, aka Awwal Architect, was also a party to the “illegal inauguration of the exco.”
The petition recommended that since the exco was not properly elected by popular votes or consensus, they should be dissolved and a caretaker committee set up to run the affairs of the branch “pending when all issues were resolved.
“Failure to do so, will leave us with no option but to find a way we can defend the interest of our teaming members.”
