To make its seventh title from the 2016 Zenith Bank Women’s Basketball, First Bank Basketball Club of Lagos has recruited seven ace players to fortify its team.
The club’s Head Coach, Peter Ahmedu, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria while speaking on the team’s preparation for the season.
Ahmedu noted that among the players currently pulling their socks to join the team is star player, Josette Anaswem, a former First Deepwater of Lagos player.
Others are Onome Akinbode, Kato Macdalyn, Jennifer Eze, Bukky Daniel, Isuonbut Mary Okon and Beninoise Aishatou Kondoh.
Anaswem, training with the team, told NAN that she was excited about the challenge and looking forward to playing among the best players the women’s league could boast of.
She said: “It is a new challenge for me.
“First Bank remains the best club in the women’s league and it is an opportunity I cannot turn down.”
On the team’s training, Ahmedu said they were encountering erratic power supply at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium, Lagos.
He said the situation was challenging during their sessions.
He said the team was now accustomed to the problem, but hoped the hall’s managers would look into it.
He said: “We’ve been preparing for the coming season with dedicated players, some of whom are working tirelessly to join the club.
“However, the only challenge that confronts us daily is the poor power supplies that cause us to train in a dim sports hall.
“What we hear is that the generator that is supposed to provide electricity whenever there is a power outage is not strong enough to provide adequate supply.”
Meanwhile, the hall’s manager, who craved anonymity, said the situation was not erratic as the team enjoyed their training under good supply of electricity.
He said: “There is a little problem though.
“It has to do with the generator that supplies electricity whenever there is power outage that is not so strong to achieve required supply.
“It is being looked into because I already made my complaint to my superior officer.”
However, First Bank has continued to train for the league, which will dunk off after the Nigeria Basketball Federation’s annual meeting in Abuja in February regardless of challenges.
