EPL: Anichebe bags brace in Sunderland win

Victor Anichebe scored twice as Sunderland recorded a vital 3-0 win at home to Hull City in the Premier League.
Jermain Defoe scored in the first half and Victor Anichebe scored twice in the second as Sunderland — who were reduced to 10 men late on as Papy Djilobodji was shown a second yellow card — won a big north east battle and dragged Hull further into the relegation battle.
With the win Sunderland now has eight points on the season, while Hull remains on 10.
The Black Cats took the lead in the first half via that man Defoe.
He scored his 150th Premier League goal as he took on Curtis Davies and shifted the ball onto his left foot before rifling home. 1-0 to Sunderland as their leading man led by example in the basement battle.
Hull had a great chance to equalize as Robert Snodgrass was the instigator and set up Ryan Mason but he dragged his effort wide.
Anichebe then doubled Sunderland’s lead as Patrick Van Aanholt did superbly down the left flank to set up the powerful forward for his second goal in as many games.
Jordan Pickford had to deny Snodgrass’ overhead kick and then Pickford and Van Aanholt somehow cleared off the line late on as Hull pushed forward.
That left gaps and Sunderland exposed them with Defoe teeing up Anichebe who rifled home to lift the Black Cats off the bottom of the table. Djilobodji was sent off late in the game for a second yellow following a bad challenge on Jarrod Bowen but nothing could spoil Sunderland’s mood.
