The Niger State Government on Wednesday decried the rate of pre-election violence in the state, vowing to prosecute anybody that perpetrates violence during and after the general elections.
The Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Danladi Ndayebo, said on Wednesday at a post-State Executive Council briefing in Minna, the Niger State capital, that the state has directed the various agencies to effect arrest.
Ndayebo, while saying government will ensure the state is free from all sorts of violence, added: “The state government condemns every form of violence and will not condone any act of attacks on Nigerlites before, during and after the general elections by any persons.
“We have directed security agencies in the state to ensure that those who are involved are made to pay for it because engaging in violence negates the essence of peaceful elections.”
Also, the Niger State Commissioners for Justice and Attorney General, Bawa Wuse, and Agricultural and Rural Development, Prof. Kuta Yahaya, said government will not fold its hands and watch violence play out.
Accordingly, they said: “We won’t allow the unleashing of terror on our people by violent thugs.
“If anybody is apprehended by law enforcement agents, he must face the wrath of the law and if found guilty must serve the terms.
“We will harmonise the various laws together and ensure stiffer punishment is melt out at anybody that engages in violence.”
They however called on political parties in the state to enlighten their supporters to eschew violence as anybody found defacing billboards and removing posters will also face the wrath of the law.
