Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, on Monday described the death of former Vice President Alex Ekwueme as a big loss to the country.
Babangida said Ekwueme’s demise is at a time the invaluable roles of elder statesmen like him are needed for national cohesion.
In a statement from his Media Office in Minna, Niger State, Babangida said he is pained by the loss.
He said: “I receive the news with heavy heart but take solace in the exemplary life lived by the former Vice President.”
The former Nigerian leader extolled the virtue of simplicity that characterized the life of the late Vice President.
He stated that the death has left a very big vacuum in the quest for true national unity and peaceful coexistence for true nation building that has been the dream of every Nigerian in the usually resilient spirit to always be key players.
Babangida said: “His simplicity is a rare virtue, despite his intellectual depth I have come to know him with carriage of a man that is always living a very worthwhile live built on values and morality, we will miss him, Nigeria needs people like him now than ever.
“I condole with the family of the late Dr Ekwueme, the government and people of Anambra state and Nigerians, I pray that God gives the Family and all of us the fortitude to bear the irreplaceable loss.”
