The Delta State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday hailed President Goodluck Jonathan for exhibiting the virtue of a sportsman in the just-concluded presidential contest.
The party maintained that the President has taught the whole world a great lesson that politics is not a ‘do-or-die’ affair.
The party lauded the President especially for graciously accepting his defeat by General Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, describing it as a good omen for democracy.
The party said if President Jonathan had allowed his personal curiosity to undo the national interest, Nigeria would have been in turmoil by now.
Speaking at an emergency meeting of PDP Elders, Leader and Stakeholders summoned by Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan at the Unity Hall, Government House, Asaba on Wednesday, the state Chairman of the party, Chief Edwin Uzor, said conceding the defeat must have taught the opposition a great lesson.
Governor Uduaghan, at the meeting, warned against taking the opposition parties for granted ahead of the forthcoming governorship election, even as Uzor maintained that Jonathan’s acceptance of his defeat was a victory for democracy in Nigeria.
Uzor said: “We are indeed extremely proud of the leadership of our party, from the President to his followers. What is obvious is that what has eluded the Nigeria for decades, which is the right attributes of true democracy, has been bequeathed by the PDP to Nigeria.”
Corroborating him, the Director (Media/Publicity) of the PDP Campaign Organization in the state, Dr. Festus Okubor, lauded President Jonathan for his gracious virtue.
Okubor said: “No gainsaying that the presidential election was keenly fought. From the 25 per cent votes the President got across the 25 states in Nigeria makes it obvious that he has support across the country. He has been so gracious in conceding the defeat by congratulating the winner. This is the first time it is happening in this country. And it is a great virtue and a great achievement of the party for democracy in Nigeria.”
Okubor however said the APC should not dissipate energy on plot to win Delta State in the governorship, insisting that the state is wholly a PDP state as witnessed in the outcome of the presidential election.
He said: “In Delta State, PDP won massively in the 25 Local Government Areas for Jonathan. We have resolved here (emergency meeting) to go ahead to win the governorship election in the state.
“Already, we have won the three Senate seats and nine House of Representatives’ seats. It is obvious that Delta is a PDP state. We have done what is expected of us in a good political management. So to deliver the state for our party is a task that must be effectively done.”
Okubor urged PDP supporters in the state to go ahead to win the governorship, insisting: “It is only PDP that has shown rightful presence across the 25 council areas in the state.”
