Delta to employ 1,500 youths as environmental marshals

The Delta State Government on Wednesday said it would engage 1,500 youths as Environmental Marshals in 2014.
The Commissioner for the Environment, Chief Frank Omare, made this known at the budget defence of the ministry before House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Oil and Gas in Asaba.
Omare said that the marshals would ensure that the major streets and towns were kept clean and wastes adequately disposed.
“This is one of the measures we are taking to ensure that the state is kept clean at all times,” he said.
He said the ministry had concluded plans to purchase more equipment for evacuation of wastes, noting that this was part of the ministry’s efforts to strengthen environmental sanitation across the state.
The commissioner said that the ministry would soon complete the construction of the first incinerator in Asaba, which was meant to recycle wastes to wealth.
He said the state government had also approved the construction of an additional incinerator in Warri axis, adding: “This one will cover Warri, Ughelli, Okpe and Sapele axis.”
Omare appealed to the people to ensure that they maintained a high standard of hygiene for the benefit of the state.
Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Daniel Yingi, commended the ministry for its programmes and stressed the need for it to improve on the sanitation of the state.
