“The situation in Minneapolis is no longer in any way about the murder of George Floyd, it is about attacking civil society, instilling fear and disrupting our great cities,” Walz said during a news conference.
The 21-year-old US-born McKennie wore an armband with the message: “Justice for George,” during Saturday’s 1-0 Bundesliga defeat at home to Werder Bremen.
He was the subject of at least a dozen police conduct complaints that resulted in no disciplinary action and one that led to a “letter of reprimand.”
Protests broke out in the Midwestern city over the death of George Floyd, an African American man who died after a white police officer placed his knee on Floyd’s neck despite pleas that he could not breathe.
In the video, recorded by a bystander, a police officer pressed his knee into a black man’s neck during an arrest in Minneapolis on Monday evening, as the man repeatedly said: “I can’t breathe” and “please, I can’t breathe.”
