The Senate on Wednesday resolved to investigate a report by Amnesty International indicting Security Agencies of rape and domestic violence against women in the Internally Displaced Persons camps in Borno State.
The Senate’s decision was sequel to a point of order raised by Senator Shehu Sani, who expressed dissatisfaction with the response of the Presidency to the allegations by Amnesty International.
Senator Sani asked his colleagues to look into the grave allegations against Nigeria’s security forces.
According to him, the report is not only a thesis by AI, it contains names, identity, photographs, instances and personal confessions of victims of rape, starvation and torture.
He said: “As a democracy, we have a twin obligation to prosecute the war on terror and in every possible way protect and defend the fundamental rights of Nigerians
“It is a concern that this report infringes on the image of not only the security forces of Nigeria but Nigeria as a country.”
Speaking on the point of order, the Deputy Senate Leader, Bala Na’Allah, cautioned his colleagues on the probe because of the intricate nature of the war.
After contributions from lawmakers, the Senate unanimously agreed to set up an ad-hoc committee to investigate the allegations raised by Amnesty International.
