The Senate on Tuesday began investigation into the leadership crisis rocking Ondo State House of Assembly.
Last month, the Ondo Assembly was hit by crisis which led to the impeachment of Speaker Bamidele Oleyelogun and Deputy Speaker Ogundeji Iroju by 18 lawmakers.
But it was gathered eight lawmakers backed by the Police are in charge of State Assembly.
Coming under point of order, the Minority Leader of the Senate, Senator Biodun Olujinmi, revealed that the Ondo State House of Assembly Assembly has been shut down, adding that Armoured Personnel Carriers were parked at the entrance of the Assembly, making way for only eight lawmakers to conduct plenary session.
Olujimi said: “Eighteen members were attacked by thugs at the State House of Assembly and sustained injuries.
“Most of their cars were damaged and they have been refused entry into the Chambers.
“Only eight were allowed into the Chambers.
“An injury to one is an injury to all; the Police should not prevent legislators from their duties.”
Other senators who spoken condemned the current situation in Ondo State, calling on the Nigeria Police to vacate the premises of the state Assembly.
In his contribution, Senator Isah Misau said: “These are things that we have read in the papers.
“It is not possible that the Minority Leader and Senator Boroffice would present a matter of such gravity without investigating the issue first.”
Also, Senator Atai Aidoko said: “Official security for the legislature should be provided without interference from the Executive or Police.
“We must take this seriously.
“The Legislative arm at the State and National level should have their own security.”
After exhaustive deliberation, the Senate asked security personnel should allow the legislators perform their legislative duties.
It also mandated the Senate Committee on Police to investigate the infringement and report back on their findings.
